This is the Day!

Updated: Nov 8, 2019

The sound of children still rings in our ears as the past two weeks saw more than 600 kids attend Vacation Bible School at St. Luke's Downtown and Edmond campuses. VBS today has a new theme every year with decorations, lessons, crafts, and songs. All I can remember from when I was a kid in VBS is making a plaster of Paris oval laminated with a picture of Jesus for my grandmother, wafer cookies and Kool-Aid, and singing, "This is the day that the Lord has made!"

This is the day Ending Hunger OKC officially kicks off its home-delivered meal program, Meals on Wheels of Oklahoma City. We have spent several months looking forward to July 1 knowing it gives us a new means to share God's love and bring hope to the world. In the future, we will be adding additional programs such as AniMeals on Wheels, Kids Cuisine, and ElderEats.

We want you to be part of Ending Hunger OKC and Meals on Wheels of Oklahoma City. We will begin delivering meals to homebound seniors this week and are in need of volunteers immediately. Simply fill out our online volunteer application, complete a quick background check, then look for opportunities to serve in your community.

Lastly, let me say we don’t see this as a St. Luke’s thing; it’s an Oklahoma City thing. We feel fortunate to have this opportunity to work with people all across the metro. We’ll be inviting our friends in the Jewish and Muslim communities to be part of Ending Hunger OKC. Driving home recently, I found myself thinking how neat it would be if synagogues could prepare kosher meals, or people attending a mosque could deliver evening meals to their homebound seniors during Ramadan. We want this to be something where everyone can come together for the good of others.

This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it!
